Scale model of a medieval column with carved capital and part of two-tone
arches, cut and assembled with natural stone.
THE PIECE IN DETAIL:
Work inspired by emerging architectural elements of one of the old palaces
of the Lercari coterie, in Genoa. Until the beginning of the 20th
century, the great architectural heritage of the medieval town, described by
travelers and scholars, was believed to be irretrievably lost. But starting
from 1907, the work of the Ufficio di Belle Arti brought to light a huge
number of elements (walls, columns, arches, windows) belonging to those
sumptuous buildings, which, far from having disappeared, persisted hidden
under layers of plastering as a result of reforms that irremediably altered
its appearance and structure. In Conservatori del Mare alley we can find
one of these buildings, still showing the elements of the original loggia
and stone façade that I reproduced here.
The materials used are: white alabaster for the column, the capital and part
of the façade, Ligurian gray slate for the abacus and the dark bands,
cement, vinyl glue. All the elements that make up the piece are worked with
manual or mechanical means without the use of molds, which makes it a unique
work that will hardly be replicated with identical characteristics.
The wooden frame, painted in slate color, is equipped with a support to hang
it on any wall indoors. It is particularly suitable for decorating a living
room or a study/office.
